Susan's Vineyard
Former California residents, Susan and Bentley Mooney were looking to create their own version of the “living off the land”. Upon tasting a Pinot Noir from Archery Summit in Dayton, Oregon, they discovered the “cash crop” they wanted to grow. In 2000, the vineyard was prepared & planted with the four Dijon clones to reflect the clones Archery Summit used.
After spending nearly 20 years nurturing the vineyard, Susan & Bentley decided to start their own winery. With the help of Jonathan Oberlander of J. Scott Cellars fame, the wine business became a reality.
With Brand Ambassador Cathy Lucia heading up sales & marketing, tastings are an intimate experience with scheduled appointments & events. “We want to know our wine club members & this environment provides a beautiful, informal setting to get to know one another”.
Through the growing season, Cathy, Susan & Bentley work the vines & hire a crew for the harvest. Friends & family assist on occasion as well. The vines were irrigated to help get them established initially. Now, the vineyard is “dry farmed” which produces a bolder flavor & color profile.
There are not many vineyards in the area. In fact, when the idea of a vineyard was discussed, the owners were told “it would never work” due to the high elevation. There are no signs leading to the vineyard on top of the mountain filled with fruit. Matter of fact, the driveway itself is almost a mile long going up the countryside. Once you drive past the gate, the open terroir breathes fresh air. The new tasting room & outside seating offers views for miles! Not far from home but the feel of togetherness when you get there inspires.
