Winemaking, in quite a few cases are a family affair. You find boutique wineries all over Oregon in which the owners and winemakers tend the field, harvest, distribute, etc. Starting in Mendoza, Argentina were the region is known for big reds, Torrontes and Chardonnay, his father continues to work as a wine broker. Working the vineyards as an agricultural engineer, he tended the vines of local growers in the area. Today, J.P. Valot is the widely acclaimed head winemaker at Silvan Ridge Winery and has filled that role since 2012. Those familiar with Oregon Solidarity, Valot is 1 of only 4 predominant names mentioned on the label.
The 2012 year was a special time for him and his wife Doris. They decided to become owners in Valcan Cellars. The couple wanted to continue the legacy and pass something on to their children. They purchased 3.5 acres in Monroe, continuing to follow his roots in deep beautiful reds. The name came from a marriage of last names as an effort of love and dedication. Val - for Valot, and Can - Cancel, Doris’ maiden name.
As for the label, they wanted to depict something that represented their family love for each other. Appreciation for their past cultures, history and passion in winemaking. Something that honored Doris’ Puerto Rican heritage and Juan Pablo’s (J.P.) Argentinian roots. They were inspired by a Petroglyph from the Arawak tribe, indigenous people of the Caribbean. Original Taino drawings with the birds symbolizing the eternal lovers. When the beaks of the birds kiss, they represent the infinity sign. The labels are made of recycled paper and texture it with other petroglyph drawings for an authentic feel.
Valcans’ 2015 Petite Sirah has complex flavors and aromas of red and black cherries. Lively, acidic and balanced by a supple, smooth velvety texture and winning Gold in the 2018 Oregon Wine Competition (90 Points WE). The Mélange de Vin is a full-bodied red blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo. Aged 20 months with flavors of plum and dark red berries, smooth tannins and a long finish (90 Points WE). The White Malbec "Bare", produced in a “minimalistic” style, light medium-bodied wine with a bright acidity, smooth tannins and a long finish, delivering flavors and aromas of wild berries, apple, pear, melon, lemon blossom and a touch of citrus (89 Points WE).
No long drives out of town to search out Valcan Cellars tasting room. Located in a corner suite of Corvallis near the riverwalk passing unique shops and eateries along the way. Outside tastings only, tables along the street to accommodate. Depending on your taste, palate and mood, Valcan has 4 different flights to choose from. Casual. Relaxing. Enjoyable.
